Excessive Barking
Does your dog bark constantly?
Maltese can be protective of their owner, so will bark at strangers, other animals or upon hearing suspicious noises. In such instances, they act as watch dogs.
However, when your dog barks at practically everything that he sees or hears, this is nuisance barking. No doubt this "unnecessary" barking drives you up the wall.
Here are some tips to deal with excessive barking:
-
Fill a squirt gun with water. Whenever your dog barks inappropriately, spray his face and say "NO BARK" firmly. Eventually, he'll just stop barking the moment you show him your squirt gun.
-
Put a few pennies in an empty pop can and seal it with tape. Shake the can when your dog barks and say "NO BARK" firmly. Praise him when he stops barking. If you are throwing the can instead, make sure you don't hit him with it. Just toss it to the floor next to him to interrupt his barking.
-
Wrap your hand around your dog's muzzle and say "NO BARK" firmly. Praise him when he stops barking. Repeat this correction whenever he barks.
May I suggest that you choose one of these methods and use it consistently. Only if the chosen method fails to correct your dog's behaviour then you try another method.
